Important fashion question
Monday, July 31, 2006
I may have brought this subject up before; I don't remember. But even if I had, I'm bringing it back up because the debate was never settle in a way that satisfies me.

Pleated Pants vs. Flat Fronted Pants. Last night, this issue was covered by a roomful of women and a couple of men. A guy was wearing pleated pants, and all but one woman commented on how awful pleated pants are. The men in the group didn't give two craps about if the guy's pants were pleated or flat fronted. However, when pressed about why they feel that pleated pants are awful, the women had no answer, except that they personally think they're ugly. I'm sorry, but your personal taste is a weak foundation for a debate. Please leave the stage and take your seat.

Tell me, who said that pleated pants are tantamount to the Holocaust? Did some fashion designer deem them unworthy recently? Did some hipster on Project Runway turn up his/her nose at them on an episode?

If pleated pants are so awful, why do so many guys wear them? I walk around my work building, full of lawyers and other professionals, and see nine out of 10 guys wearing pleated pants. Some of these guys are younger than me, and I'm sure most make more money than I do, so it stands to reason they're aware of modern fashion trends and are able to afford them. But they go for the pleats. Why?

I know there are some fashion Nazis that read this blog, so please whip out your best reasons for not wearing pleated pants. If they're reasonable and logical enough, I'll pass them on to the lawyers on the 13th floor.

My flat fronts are poofing up right now. Wait. Maybe that's not due to the material.

i'm going to go with joshua and say it's the poof factor. pleats are frill, and guy's pants do not need frill.
i also detest the braided belt, but that's another subject.

Surely, there has to be other reasons than poofiness for girls detesting guys in pleated pants.

I also always felt pleated pants were like formal parachute pants...

i think that so many men wear pleated pants becuase they are more comfortable - the pleats add more fabric and more stretch room for those with bigger bellies, which also explains the poof factor.

i've always associated pleated pants with something my dad would wear. but also, flat fronted pants look a little more 'retro' and i think a lot of girls find boys in retro-wear attractive.

maybe i'm taking this too far, but maybe maybe since flat pants end up being tigher, you get a better preview of the man (butt, package, etc) and who wouldn't like that?

My husband deems "origami of the crotch" inappropriate for all occasions.

    I have heard your call.

The thing with the pleated pants is this. At one time, the pleats were thought to "enhance" -- and I think we all know what I mean. Ishi up there is also right with the comfort factor and the fact that many men feel the camoflauge poochy stomachs. Some have said that they feel pleats blur the line between flab and package. Ew.
My dad still wears pleated pants. So do some guys at work. I've urged all of them not to as the pleats are not flattering in anyway. The widen the mid-section and draw the eye to the flaw and, as Joshua said, the poof.
I may be wrong, and I'm not looking it up now, but I believe that pleats came about as a way to have dress pants that didn't need to be so strictly tailored. They were less expensive and became even more popular with the rising of the sport shirt. Again with the not flattering. Again with what my dad wears.
Flat fronts are inherently more slimming and less intrusive to an outfit. They can sort of disappear or show off as necessary. Pleats are just there, plain as day, poofin'.
I believe it was the late, great Cary Grant that said, "Flat fronts all the way." I wholeheartedly agree.
Not that I care about pants or anything.

Pleats are like jumping into a swimming pool wearing baggy swimtrunks. Your entire crotch explodes. Not cool.

I'm agreeing with Nerver - pleats just aren't flattering. And, going back to what Ishi wrote -- if a man is wearing pleats, it's hard to tell what's going on.

unneccessary folds should always be approached with the utmost of caution.

I wouldn't know the difference between these pants if I saw them. I only know tight and non-tight.

Pleats are not created equal. Pleats on a man can work, if the pants fit correctly and the pleats lie flat. But for a woman, pleats are strictly VERBOTEN!! No woman, no matter how thin needs to have the added bulk of extra material gracing their lower abdominal area.
Its a fashion atrocity that should NEVER, EVER see the light of day.

Pleats make you look fat, I dont care what kind of shape you are in... also they are so incredibly 80's... these pleated pants have the sex appeal that 80's shoulder pads have on women now days. Just lose the pleats, whats the problem, if women dont like them and you like women, whats the cost for a little love? We dont need a legitimite reason to hate them, we just DO
