Finally...
Friday, January 27, 2006
Last night, we played our first show since August 2004. In the end, I believe we did well, and I didn't break a single string! The headliners, Warsaw (a Joy Division tribute band), were perfect in their execution of the songs, except for one thing: They were too perfect. Joy Division was known for their sloppy live shows. Warsaw should have screwed up a few times to really capture the spirit of the band.

Thank you to everyone that came out to see us play. It meant a lot to us.

For those that missed it, here's one picture of us from the show.

David Bowie, I love you, but please leave my head. Now.
Wednesday, January 25, 2006
I've organized my clips, worked on my resume, and started working on the cover letter. By the end of the week, my overseas job application will be sent.

Since getting this job is a real possibility, I've thought about all the things that usually keep me here and how I can work with them.

Family: They'll always be here, and I'm certain I can fly back fairly often when needed.

Friends: They're only an email or phone call away, and I'm sure most of them will want to stay with me when I move. And yes, I'd be happy to let anyone crash with me.

Significant Other: I'm not dating anyone. Hell, I don't even have a reliable booty call (applications accepted, though).

Band: This is a big one. I'm certain that we could keep the band going through tape swapping. Thanks to the Internets, the world is much smaller, and music is much easier to produce and distribute.

In the end, the only thing keeping me from accepting this job (if I get it) is fear. And if you know me, you know I'm all about not letting fear rule my life, so that settles that issue.

Friday night, I schooled Wee Demon in darts. She actually put up a good first game, but after that, it was all downhill for her. Maybe it was those Starburst drinks that affected her aim.

(Either I've just thrown a dart or I'm busting out my new dance move that will take the nation by storm.)

(Wee Demon proves that she hit the board. Look closely at the darts; there are breasts on them!)

Saturday night, I saw Chad's band, The Drams, play a great show. After that, all I remember is drinking and playing blackjack.

(Blurry, "artsy" photo of The Drams.)

Sunday night, I got my dance on for La Bitessa's early birthday celebration. I still need to find out who does that "Everybody's Fucking on the Dance Floor" song.

Breaking news: I just purchased my $38/each Belle & Sebastian tickets. Who's going with me?

Shout outs: Check out Swirly Girl's blog for your reading pleasure, and please take a look at my good friend James' journal. Ladies, he's single.

The Direct Vent
Friday, January 20, 2006
The only way to begin this is to be direct: I'm having trouble believing anything anyone says to me anymore. I'm not suggesting some of these people are liars. I'm suggesting that they're cowards. The inability to be direct with me lowers my esteem for them. And trying to understand why they act this way is a Sisyphean effort.

What caused me to begin thinking about the issue of direct/indirectness stems from several current news items and some personal heartache in my friends' lives.

First there's the whole James Frey controversy. Is it fiction, or is it non-fiction. Just be upfront and tell us the truth! Don't be wishy-washy and scared of rejection.

Then there's JT Leroy. Guy? Girl? Real? Fake? Dammit people, can't you just be honest?!

And then there are examples from my friends' lives.

My friend H-- has fallen for a guy who keeps telling her he likes her and wants to hang out with her, but then only calls or answers her emails when it's convenient for him.

Another friend, A--, is kind of experiencing the same thing. At least her guy calls or emails her back (though not in a timely manner), but still acts aloof when she wants to hang out with him.

And look at Ragna's ordeal for another example.

Do these guys like the girls? If they don't, why don't they just tell them that directly? I understand trying to be a nice person and being aware of someone's feelings, but being aware of someone's feelings also includes knowing that dragging something out is more hurtful in the long run. Be direct; be honest; say what is on your mind.

Usually, this aloofness trait is attibuted to only guys, but that's not true. For me, I recently experienced it with the "girl who never called back." Her inaction is rude and inconsiderate.

I'm not saying I'm innocent. I've failed to call people when I said I would, but it's not a habit I practice on a regular basis. If you call or email me, I'll get back to you within 24 hours. That goes for friends and amatory friends.

There was a time when you could believe what people told you. You trusted them; you hoped that they were telling you the truth, helping you along in life. That feeling shouldn't be relegated to childhood. It should extend into adult lives.

In the long run, I just need to distance myself from trepid people. Their indirectness and inaction is neither cute or amusing, only ugly and cowardly.

Bust a move
Thursday, January 19, 2006
Last night, I attended a new friend's going away party. I met Marcia a few weeks ago through my friend Chelsea. I'd heard about Marcia for months, but I never saw her out and about. Then, once I met her, she was everywhere. Maybe it's because she's moving and she's trying to hit all her favorite places, but everywhere I turn she's there. That's not a bad thing, though. She's good people, and we have tons in common. Instead of being my new Texas friend, she'll now be my "another good person to visit in New York City" friend. Here's a photo of us.

So, one person moves and another one re-emerges. After Marcia's shindig, I headed over to 80's Night at the Cavern. Let me tell you this, it's so nice to see a DJ actually use vinyl when spinning. I'm tired of watching DJs "spin" by inserting CDs into a player or by pushing buttons on their iPods. This guy at the Cavern drops beats, mixes songs, etc.

While there, I ran into my old friend Elayne. I have not see her in probably more than a year...maybe two. She used to date an old high school friend of mine, and that's how we first met. It was nice to catch up with her, and now she'll be my hook-up for all things 80's related and art related (she works at a museum here in town).

Breaking news: I'm seriously thinking of applying for a job overseas. I'm very qualified for it, and I really believe I'd get it. This makes me nervous.

Shout Out: Doomed Moviethon
Wednesday, January 18, 2006
I have a friend named Richard who lives in Florida. Richard is a quality guy. His use of the word and phrase "duder" and "fukk partie" have revolutionize the Internets, where he is currently making a name for himself in other, more literary ways...namely with Doomed Moviethon.

Doomed Moviethon is a horror and cult movie review site. While I'm a fan of some horror movies, I'm nowhere near the fan that Richard is. His Web site should be your one stop destination for all things horror movie related.

You can even read one of Eric's reviews for the site.

Pumpkin Seed Cheese Snacker Krackers are good
Monday, January 16, 2006
As Jim Anchower says, I know it's been a long time since I rapped at ya, so here is the Pimplomat update.

1) Michaela, Landon, and I attended some more art openings on Friday. One was for artist Scott Barber, who passed away in 2005 because of leukemia. Upon entering the gallery, I wasn't that impressed with the art. But as I walked through the gallery, drinking my free wine, I began to appreciate the works more. They were like clouds, in that you know they're there, but you don't really pay attention to them. But when you do, you can start to see all sorts of shapes and figures, helped by your imagination. Visit Barry Whistler Gallery, click on Scott Barber on the front page, and then click on numbers seven and eight for examples of what was shown on Friday.

2) The White Ghost Shivers brought down the house at the Doublewide. Any band that throws down a Charleston dance-off is tops in my book.

3) Wine. It was everywhere. I had my bi-monthly wine party this past weekend. Usually, about 15 people show up. Not this time. This time, we had 28 bottles to judge, and about twice that many people in and out during the night. Leah was the big winner for the night. She took home $28 and a shitload of pride. On the opposite end, the as always lovely Wee Demon took home last place. This is fitting, since she doesn't like wine to begin with. She was a sport, attending the party with a sore throat and all. Basically, I think she just wanted to see me.

4) The new Woody Allen movie, Match Point, is good. Go see it. It's nothing like he's done before.

5) I went clothes shopping for the first time in more than a year. I'm happy to find out that I've lost two inches off my waist.

6) I've been roped into reading Crime and Punishment by Chad's girlfriend. She was complaining recently that she has no one to read and discuss books with, so I offered to read a book with her. I told her it was her choice, and she choose C&P. Out of the hundreds of books I have, it's one I don't already own. Half Price Books here I come.

7) There's this great band playing on 26 January and 15 February. I expect you all to be there. You can crash at my place.

Rolling the dice
Tuesday, January 10, 2006
Lately, I've been playing a lot of the game "5,000" with my friends Val and Liz. It's a dice game where you have to be the first person to score 5,000 points. Roll a 1 and you get 100 points; roll a 5 and you get 50 points. Roll a 1,2,3,4 and you get 1,500 points. There are a couple more rules. Everytime we play, Val writes down the instructions. I should snatch one of her instruction sheets next time, so I can remember exactly how to play.

It's a fun game, and it's a good way to close out the night. Grab your last remaining drinks and cool down with some dice.

Here are some photos from our game on Saturday.

Friday night, the gig was up.
Monday, January 09, 2006
The owner of the bar where I've been getting in free and receiving some free drinks finally found out that I'm not who he thinks I am. I wonder if anything will change. Still, I think I earned my keep. The door guy was missing, so the owner had to go pick up another guy to work that night. While he was gone, he asked me to check IDs at the door. I had a huge, I can crack your skull in pieces, flashlight, and I felt powerful. I only had to work 30 minutes, and it was fun. In the end, the owner bought all my drinks for me (and my friends) that night.

Saturday, I made my way to the new-ish Darkside Lounge to catch the Veldt, Black Heart Society, and the Black Angels. Wee Demon does a great job summing up the place and the bands, and I'm in total agreement with her about all the bands and the venue. Please read her review. You can say you heard about The Veldt here first when they blow up big nationally.

Sunday, thanks to Wee Demon, I got to watch Grey's Anatomy. It was a refresher show, and now I'm all caught up on the story lines. I don't really watch that much TV, but Grey's Anatomy is really good. You have Arrested Development for the comedy and Grey's Anatomy for the drama. What else do you need?

Thank you Wee Demon for the pasta. And the drinks. And the hospitality.

Stockholm
Friday, January 06, 2006
It's been awhile since I last checked in here, but my mind has been on other things. Let's not talk about one of them in particular. Instead, let's talk about another one of the things: Stockholm.

I finally finished my article about this beautiful city. Like when I visited Paris, I loved just walking around and taking in the atmosphere and people watching. Everyone seemed to be doing some sort of exercising. Or else they were eating ice cream (this was in the summer). Everyone just seemed so damn happy.

I'd like to revisit Stockholm one day. Who wants to go with me?

Here are some pictures from that trip. Please enjoy them.

Starting new
Tuesday, January 03, 2006
My New Years started on Thursday night. From then until now, here are the things I've observed.

1) A certain bar owner thinks I'm someone I'm not. I shouldn't complain, because I get free drinks out of it.

2) I'm starting to become very good at the game Skip-bo.

3) I shouldn't fret about a certain girl not calling me and then calling me and then not calling me and then calling me and then not calling me. You get the point. Games are so 20th century.

3a) Certain girl needs to fucking contact me.

4) Wee Demon throws good parties and makes bad-ass mixes. Her make-out couch was very enticing.

5) I met someone who just got back from Iraq. He validated everything I think about this war.

6) Don't stand next to your ex-girlfriend as she's making out with her boyfriend.

7) Wear better shoes if you're going to walk drunk at least half a mile.

8) The bar losing your bank card is not the end of the world, just frustrating.

9) Champagne has replaced Dr. Pepper as nectar of the gods.

10) Don't blog drunk. (Crap...already screwed that one up.)
